Udyam, startup recognition and IEC advice

At setup
A customer asking for Udyam, an investor asking about DPIIT recognition and an export order needing an IEC raise three separate eligibility questions. TheTaxCo reviews the purpose of each request, prepares the supporting information and handles the applicable registration and maintenance work through the permitted route.
You may qualify for one route and have no need for the others. We assess each independently.
Udyam for an eligible enterprise
Udyam records micro, small and medium enterprises. Classification uses both investment in plant and machinery or equipment and turnover. The limits effective from 01-04-2025 are:
Category | Investment not exceeding | Turnover not exceeding |
|---|---|---|
Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
The government portal uses PAN- and GST-linked data, subject to the applicable registration requirements. Udyam registration is paperless and based on self-declaration; the registration does not need renewal. The enterprise must keep its information current. Official Udyam requirements and classification.
Our team checks eligibility, classification, activity information and record consistency, assists with the application and checks the issued record. Registration remains through the government portal or authorised government single-window system, with the enterprise completing its required declarations and authentication. A Udyam record does not establish entitlement to every MSME scheme or every delayed-payment remedy; each benefit has its own conditions.
DPIIT startup recognition
The current Startup India criteria distinguish normal recognised startups from Deeptech recognition. The normal route includes private limited companies, registered partnerships, LLPs and cooperative societies, with an age limit of 10 years and turnover not exceeding ₹200 crore in any financial year since incorporation. The Deeptech route has separate criteria, including limits of 20 years and ₹300 crore. Innovation or improvement, scalability and the restriction on splitting or reconstructing an existing business must also be considered. Startup India’s recognition criteria.
The business description needs evidence of what the venture does, what it develops or improves and how it expects to grow. We organise that explanation from actual product, process and operating information. Recognition is separate from a tax exemption, grant, loan or investor decision; an additional benefit may require a separate application and eligibility review.
IEC for import and export activity
Under the Foreign Trade Policy, goods imports and exports generally require IEC unless exempt. For exports of services or technology, the policy links IEC to claiming Foreign Trade Policy benefits. The code is PAN-based but is separately issued through DGFT. Foreign Trade Policy, paragraph 2.05.
An existing IEC must be updated or its unchanged details confirmed online during April–June every year. Failure to update can lead to deactivation. Before an order is scheduled, check the code’s status, entity name, bank details and the product’s import/export restrictions. IEC does not replace a product-specific authorisation.
What the engagement produces
The initial assessment states which registrations fit the enterprise and transaction. We prepare the data checklist and activity description, handle the applicable application and document queries, and reconcile the issued record with the approved particulars. We also handle IEC maintenance and changes to existing recognition records, using their own deadlines and supporting documents.
We begin with the legal form, incorporation date, activity, approximate investment and turnover, and the reason a registration is being requested. At the application stage we request the constitution, tax and bank records needed for the selected route. The applicant reviews declarations and completes the required authentication.
Timing depends on accurate source data, a complete business explanation and the authority’s processing.
Before applying for all three
A small service business may need a Udyam review without qualifying for startup recognition. A recognised startup still needs to assess IEC against its actual cross-border trade. Missing documents call for a preparation step, not an assumption that no registration applies.
